    Guadalupe Mountain National Park

Hey there, I'm planning a backpack for a few days within Guadalupe Mtn National Park. Looks like there's lots of trees in the high back country areas along the McKittrick Ridge. Has anyone ever taken their hammock into this park and have advice on the best overnight areas to stay in the back country? I know that I need to get permits when I check in, but I'm hoping to plan out my trails ahead of time and would be interested in those with previous knowledge in case they need me to reserve a campsite area and leave a hiking plan before I head out.

I'm sure I'll do a couple of day hikes and then plan a loop that takes 2-3 days, perhaps linking to the Bush Mtn trail. Its a matter of how much water I can comfortably carry on a strenuous hike.

Any advice or experience in the park would be welcome. I want to use my hammock if its possible.

I've been interested in that park myself. I look forward to hear how it works out.

The last time I was there the ranger at Pine Springs made me take down my hammock -- but that was not in the back country. I'd call ahead.

Good to know. I'll take both sleep options just in case.

We did Big Bend a few years ago and had plenty of trees to hang from up in the mountains but the lower you got the trees are hard to come by. I carried 2 gallons of water for 2.5 days and used every drop!

I called the park this morning. They will allow hammocks with tree straps as long as I can find the trees per the Pine Springs Ranger I spoke to today. He said I'd have a difficult time finding two trees in the Pine Springs campground as most areas only have one tree. He also said they have pictures of the backcountry campsites and it would help me make up my mind as to which sleep system I'd like to pack up there. Most of the videos I've watched on you tube show plenty of trees when you get up to the Tejas Trail or Blue Ridge sites.

Now, I just hope all of the Rangers are on the same page as to what they find acceptable!
