    Tarp With Doors

When you wish you would have splurged for that bigger tarp with doors...

Oh man that sucks! I would say pitch it low and hunker down, but you probably didn't know this was coming. I ran thru part of this deal driving home Saturday...one minute sun, the next it was a pure whiteout. Wind was BAD! One time it would have been nice to have a tent to hide out.

Forecast showed around a half inch of snow (I think we got more like 2-3 inches). I knew there would be strong winds, but figured the trees would break the worst of it. Lesson learned!

On the plus side, even though my HG quilts were covered in snow and wet, they kept me nice and warm the entire night.

The guy line broke loose once I was all tucked in - I let it flap all night.

If you had stayed in Zaleski, you would have had that Saturday afternoon but the night would have been cold but snow free. It looks like you dealt with worse than those currently on the AT in Virginia! That is one for the books!

I'm definitely no expert in hammock camping, or just the outdoors in general. I grew up in the country, but that's only part of it. I read a lot, watch a lot of videos, and talk a lot with fellow woodsmen/hikers/backpackers. All of that helps prepare me for times like this past weekend. However, you can never be prepared enough. Its one thing to watch/read how to set up a tarp for storm mode, but its a totally different thing to do it, and then experience the results. I guess life is the best teacher, lol!

I'll learn from this incident, as well as past (and definitely future) failings of my skills and/or gear, and move on.

Just for fun, here's a couple more. First video is the next morning around 6:30am, and the second video is the hike out.
