    Tarp for BWCA

next month will be first wilderness trip with hammock in the BWCA for four nights.

I have the Claytor Diamond rain fly but am think maybe I need more coverage if it really rains, like maybe a DD XL.

Or am i just sniveling and will be ok with the Claytor.

I have been through some really bad storms with my claytor. Requires a little more attention to detail in bad weather, but the simplicity of two tie outs really is a good trade off for me. I have other tarps, but use them mainly in the winter.

I'm not familiar with the ones you have mentioned, but I use the warbonnet superfly while in the bwca. I like to set up as close to water as I can which often means stronger wind coming accross the lake and the superfly gives me plenty of protection.

Looking at Superfly now. Value wise i don't think it can be beat and have heard nothing but praise for it here and on bwca.com

I believe Canoebie your wife uses one and stays drier than you?

She uses one, but was motivated primarily by the additional privacy. I have gotten wet on two occasions but it was due to user error. I pay more attention to the details now. I am able to get my claytor up way before my wife does hers, as I said, it is a trade off.

One other thing i might add, if you do not have a cooking tarp you will want more than the claytor. I always have a "group tarp" for cooking, etc. so it is not a concern. If you will have only the tarp for your hammock and want to cook, etc. under it, you will definitely want more than a diamond tarp has to offer.

I use my homemade 10'x10' silnylon tarp in the BWCA, and it's endured some SIGNIFICANT storms. I pitch it rectangular, not diagonally- this provides plenty of coverage for me. It's in porch mode on nice days, down low during rain. (Half of it flips back over the ridgeline on clear nights for stargazing.)

Canoebie is absolutely right- you will want a tarp for the group portion of the site, for cooking, keeping out of the rain or sun, or general gear coverage.

    Enjoy your trip!

True - I can get the claytor up in under 5 minutes.

There are only 2 of us going and will have a kitchen fly. So I guess i could take the claytor and if it looks like a storm brewing use the kitchen fly.

Last year I had the hennessy asym fly and we got some 35mph winds and rain. It was a full time job keeping things dry. This year I brought a guide gear 12x12 and a warbonnet superfly. We stayed dry during all kinds of weather. One thing about the BWCA weather can change in a heartbeat. I feel it is better to have too much tarp than not enough. Besides the canoe does most of the heavy lifting.
