    Impulse Buy Mistake: Hammock Stand

I purchased this hammock stand thinking I could use it with my camping hammocks in my back yard.

    http://www.costco.ca/Black-Hammock-S....10350252.html

Although it is plenty long enough, 15ft, the hook points are too low and as a result either the hammock needs to be strung way too tight or my butt is dragging on the crossbar.

Does anyone have a suggestion to modify it? The stand is held together by spring loaded locking pins through holes in the pipes. I've already recycled the box so returning it is a problem.

I have been looking at the possibility of buying a Mayan or Brazilian style for the stand as a solution.

    Thanks.

I've got one simular to that and found that a shorter hammock works better for me. I use a GTUL on it with success. I can string up an 11' hammock on it, but as you mentioned, it has to be pretty tight to keep it off the ground.

Maybe a bridge hammock would be better suited for it?

I would try to return it even though you don't have the box it came in. Costco has an excellent return policy. You can read it right on the link you provided with the description and picture. If you had it shipped to you, just take it to the nearest Costco with your proof of purchase.

If it was shorter would it work. I am thinking you can cut a piece out of the center and splice it together with EMT.

Also a muffler shop or fabrication shop may bend a piece the fits on the top. You will have to drill and bolt it on. I an thinking of a piece that slips over it and then bends straight up. I know 2Q has a modded stand like this and it works well.

    Dutch's idea ^^^

OR, maybe get some Schedule 80 (thicker walled) PVC pipe just big enough to go over the ends of the stand to extend them out higher (???) Good luck!

I like this idea. According to Derek's hang calculator an approximate 6' total height should be about right. I will get some measurements and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the suggestion Dutch, now get back to work and get my order filled.

Would a couple of surplus antenna mast poles slide over the ends to extend it?

I have a stand just like that and had the same problem. Someone on here recomended a way to bend the uprights so normal camping hammocks would fit. It works perfect now. Basically find the center point of each upright then measure six inches up and six inches down. At those two points I did a ten degree bend basically making the upright taller so my hammocks with a ridgeline won't drag the ground. Two years and still going strong. Just remember, if the bend cracks the paint to cover the bare metal so it won't rust. I also took the end caps off and hook a Omega carabine over the end of the pipe to hang on.

How'd you do that? This is a great solution! I never bought a commercial stand because I knew they were too low. This sounds great, but I don't know how you bent those pipes. My best guess would be to insert broom handles in the ends for more leverage... or something... . (scratching my head) Please elucidate!

Correction: I edited my first post, it should only be one foot between the bends. My father in law has a hydralic pipe bender in his shop so thats how I got mine done, but most muffler shops should be able to do it for you.
