Help me build an SUL setup

Hey folks,

I would like to build a very weight and volume efficient complete hammock
sleep system. help me out with building the shopping list. let me know if
there are any products out there I should be swapping one item or another
for. Money is no object. I am looking for the lightest, most compact
system I can carry for packrafting canadian summers. Ideally, hammock,
tarp and sleep system would be great if I could squeeze it all into one
25L dry bag.

My 350sq/ft gear room is starting to spill over into
the garage, so i may flush out some bags, hammocks and quilts to fund
this little venture in the 4 sale section.

Here is the SUL hammock rig i am dreaming of:

- warbonnet travel hammock single layer 1.1oz (7.1oz)
- 28ft of amsteel 3/16" rope suspension (including structural RL) (4.1oz)
- 2 modified lg fig-9's main hammock support + 2 mini fig 9's tarp support (2.1oz)
- Maccat Standard tarp in SpinnUL (8.3oz)
- 50ft of speer 1/16" no tangle guy lines (0.9oz)
- 20deg +2oz speer peapod III (42oz)
- modified bug net for peapod face hole (1oz)
- no tree-huggers (0oz)
- no tarp stakes (0oz)
- 1 25L POE valved RT dry bag. (6.1oz)

total weight, waterproofed in dry bag: 4lbs 7.6oz

the only items I dont yet own are the
maccat tarp and warbonnet hammock.

anyone talk me into something different before I make a purchase ?


I do have the warbonnet dbl layer 1.1oz hammock. I was thinking
I could use that and maybe shove my paddling clothes in the pad
pocket for extra warmth if needed. (provided they are dry enough).

So 3/16" Amsteel around the tree?
How much penalty would some webbing & tri-glides be?
Or maybe some short huggers.
Drop the Figure 9's & use the HH figure 8 knot & taughtline hitches to make up for some webbing.
You are looked at as somewhat of a true hammock adventurer it would be a shame for others to feel webbing isn't needed.
I'm not a tree hugger by any means, but I do not like it when I'm told no hammocks allowed because they hurt the trees. It's worth a couple ounces to protect the availability of hanging spots.

I should clarify. I am not opting out of treehuggers, and just ignoring tree
damage, rather i have found ways to protect trees that involve no weight
penalty. 10 finger sized 1/2" diameter sticks picked up off the ground stand
vertically between my amsteel and the tree. this spreads the load perfectly.
I have yet to snap a twig, or mark a tree using this method. it adds a couple
of minutes to my setup time, but saves a few ounces in my system weight.

as for my fig 9's. Its 2oz of pure luxury. I have been using them in a unique
way that they act as both cinch buckle and quick release. I was a die hard
knot user before them ... i suppose if I absolutely had to, I could go back

You could drop the peapod and replace them with DIY quilts. My 5oz Climashield XP quilts weigh in at 34 ounces. That is for synthetic and if I made the same quilts using 900fp down and 2.5" baffles, they would weigh around 30 ounces. Just a thought.

Hi Turk,

My DIY down top quilt is 14 oz w/ 1.5" loft, underquilt 2.5" loft at 20 oz. This summer though I will lose the underquilt and just go back to 1/4" pad, lighter, less insulation to manage in moisture, faster set up for me...maybe I'll use an SPE to help position it better but I've done OK without it too. Lose all the extra hardware, knots are great and have worked for a LONG time. Consider a DIY cuben hammock...I know you'll need bug netting up there for sure, but something along the lines of Adventure Racer dimensions would be pretty nice, with zero bells and whistles. Maybe a little condensation, but SUL always involves cutting little corners here and there, in my mind using a pad somewhat negates the issue anyways. My tarp is a 7' x 9.5' DIY cuben at 4.5 oz, pitched on the diagonal I get plenty of coverage even in heavy rain (and that's over a standard sized hennessey clone)...I had a Maccat standard size tarp as well that I just sold due to lack of use. With good site selectin you'll be fine.

I just threw the stuff in a bag to weigh it together...about 2lb 12 oz. suing the 1/4" pad option...this included tarp, guylines, pad, topquilt, DIY hammock in snakeskins, amsteel and tree huggers. To cut more wieght I'd lose the snakeskins and ring buckles in a heartbeat, chop the ridgline pocket too. My hammock is also a top loading full zip, I could go back to bottom entry style for less weight but I really hate using that setup!

I always think the key to lightening up is to first design the system as light as possible to still fit your NEEDS, and then if you want to start adding a couple luxuries back in it's much easier to gauge their value and actual weight penalty.

It also occurs to me that a little extra foam pad lying around would be a pretty handy thing on a packraft trip, both day and night! Best of luck, I'd love to know what you finally decide on.

Understanding your limitations on space, but if a CCF is waterproof on its own and wouldn't have to go inside the dry bag, could it be utilized?

If yes, you open the options of a 2/3 UQ (like the WB Yeti) + a GG CCF pad for your legs. This set-up would be smaller in your dry bag (only a 2/3 UQ packed) and lighter (21ish oz for the Yeti + 5ish oz for the pad depending on your cut) total 26 oz
add a light, down TQ...
I have used that set-up down to 4*F and I don't have anitfreeze in my veins like you!

I can try, but I can predict the response My standard HH configuration fits into 3 8L dry bags, one for the hammock, one for the SS OCF pad, one for my 30F down mummy bag. So I meet your volume spec.

My hammock with stock HH tarp, undercover, overcover, figure-9s and snakeskins weighs 3lbs 10 oz. My OCF pad + SB weighs 14 oz. Total = 4 lbs 8 oz, spitting distance of where you're at.

This configuration takes me down to the high 20's with no additional insulation, lower by adding jackets, etc. to the undercover.

I find it amusing that by combining the best of the 3rd party components, where $ is no object, the best that someone can do is equal what I can buy off the shelf from Hennessy.

OK, so you can't get down to the SUL weight with a stock configuration. The only point I was trying to make was that we get a number of newbies in this forum, and I get concerned at times that new visitors walk away thinking that hammock camping requires a custom configuration from many vendors. You can actually get fairly compact and lightweight with an off-the-shelf system from one vendor.
