    Fabric weight Issue

I am working on putting together 2 hammocks. For fun i decided to check the weight and it came in around 2.3oz. Its supposed to be unfinished 1.9oz ripstop nylon at least thats the description said. Could the extra weight be a coating on it from the Manufacture to prevent fraying?

One of my friends who sews told me that some fabrics are coated to prevent fraying. Also i did the water test and it leaked a little bit but only after a while.

If the water test took a while to seep through, the additional weight is likely a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating. Pity that the seller didn't have that information, but it shouldn't be a deal breaker as long as the fabric is still breathable. If it's not, then it won't make a particularly good hammock.

    Hope it helps!

Just to be sure...you did weigh (or calculate for) one square yard of fabric and not one linear yard...right?

yes square yard not linear yard. After i make the hammock i am going to put it though the washing machine and see if that changes things.

Also if it is DWR any ideas how to get it off???

To remove it, time and wear are about the only things I know of. I'm sure it could be accelerated by running it through the wash a buncha times, but that's also going to accelerate the wear on the fabric fibers themselves. Which, for something suspending an entire human being's weight might be...suboptimal...

DWR would not account for that much weight on a square yard. Washing...even if it could remove the DWR would not make up the weight difference. Either the fabric is miss-labeled/miss-represented or you got some with some sort of coating or..??????????

Though I've never tried it, Ed Speer once recommended fabric softener to remove the DWR treatment.

For a garment to carry a DWR label it needs to retain 80% of DWR treatment after 20 wash cycles. So 100 washings and you should be good to go.. Sorry, not much help here but fabric should be fine for a hammock.
