    Question D i y under quilts

Ok ,so i have never camped in my hammock in real cold weather, allways in a tent. My question may sound pretty dumb but i am new to cold weather hammock camping and want to know why is it that you need special under quilts and cant make one out of say- a really nice down sleeping bag and just convert it over?
Is this a dumb question or might there be a way? Either way i need alittle help figuring out how to make myself a warmer setup

Yodic comments aside. The advantages of dedicated UQ's in cold weather are many. One difference I see in you comparison is a differential cut which allows UQ's to loft no matter how tight you stretch them. This could be real concern depending how cold it gets and on the relative size of your bag. However, many folks have done the same sort of thing you preposed, in fact Shug does it for deep cold weather. Granted he uses a $400 bag. There are pros and cons to each method.

Something else to consider is the baffling may be vertical allowing the down (if that is what you have) to migrate to the bottom, leaving your shoulders to get cold.

I am curious to what exactly the differential cut is....

Simply put, one side is longer than the other which dsiables the fabric layers from scrunching together under tension.

Meaning the hammock side is shorter than the "out"side. Also the hammock side of each baffle width will also be shorter than the "out". This "differencial" makes so that the hammock side dimensions are what you get no matter how much you stretch it or hang it under your rearend. This is not the case with equally cut layers like sleeping bags and blankets.

One problem with using a sleeping bag is that the down is very uneven in a sleeping bag. Most of the down is on the top side of a sleeping bag. Very little is in the bottom side, as it would be a waste, as your body compresses it anyway in normal use.

Thus, if you open a sleeping bag out flat, one side of you might be toasty warm and the other side cold, when using a sleeping bag as an UQ or TQ.
