One problem with using a sleeping bag is that the down is very uneven in a sleeping bag. Most of the down is on the top side of a sleeping bag. Very little is in the bottom side, as it would be a waste, as your body compresses it anyway in normal use.

Thus, if you open a sleeping bag out flat, one side of you might be toasty warm and the other side cold, when using a sleeping bag as an UQ or TQ.
