    Winter Hanging?

I am just curious about what you guys that go hanging in the heart of Winter do when you are out there. I live in Utah and I am pretty much done with hanging after it starts snowing. Other than a couple of times camping in ice caves, my gear is just packed away until Spring. So, other than sleeping and eating, what does a day at a Winter hang usually consist of?

Strap on the snowshoes and go for a hike, drill a hole in a lake and fish, build a quinzee just cause you can. Lots of other stuff to do.

I'm not a fast hiker anyway but I usually go about 1/3rd the distance when it's snowing. So I take it easy and get a lot of fire wood and survive the night. That's enough for me.

I live in Salt lake as well!! I use my hammock all year if I'm by myself. Its a clark nx-150 with a warbonnet superfly. I use a JRB mt washington 4 underquilt and have been down to zero degrees with that set up! NO problems at all!

We don't get much snow here, and when we do it doesn't last too long, but I imagine I would spend a fair amount of my time processing firewood and making snow angels.

For me, mostly just overnights in deep winter, they tend to be more social than focused on hiking. For the day we might dabble in some bushcraft or site see. One time I did a big firewood gather in heavy snow, after I enjoyed an afternoon nap, one of the best ever.

    I prefer cold weather outings

The question should be what to do at night in winter. Day is spent getting to camp in a few hours it is light. Dinner is usually eaten in the dark, by headlamp or the glow of a fire. What to do for the next 15 or so hours can be a challenge. Campfire tv only lasts so long until it is nothing but reruns. You can sleep for a good chunk but even for those who appear to hibernate, there are still quite a few hours sans sun. Many read, or play cards or listen to music. I try to time my winter trips with the phases of the moon so I can take advantage of the night light. With a snow covered ground, a clear night with a full moon can be almost like daylight. So after an early dinner before sunset, I go to sleep immediately after the sun and awake around midnight when the forest is fully illuminated. Snowshoeing at this time is a lot of fun. I eat a late breakfast watching the sunrise. I also get to avoid sleeping in the coldest part of the night. This is for solo trips.
