I bought a length of zipper and zipper pulls so that I could customize the length. I am pretty sure the final length was 21".

Be careful, in the vent for the back of the poncho, if you plan on covering your pack. You may inadvertently make a funnel for water to go down your pack or back....

I'm with you, a poncho's plus is that they're like a bellows and push out hot wet air fairly well. I can steam up traditional rain pants or jacket and become wet from the inside out, but with a poncho, I don't have that problem. Ponchos have become my summer go to item. When it's cold I still like the rain coat and pants with polypro long-johns and a layer of fleece, it's almost as warm as a winter jacket and ski-pants.

I believe what may work for you is the "Parcho", Wilderness Outdoor Products has a pattern for it.
.... the Aardvark (earth pig)... a rather unremarkable creature whose sole claim to fame is that it is the first animal listed in the dictionary.
