The other day I noticed the "tree side" of the stitching on my tree straps showed some slight wear. Over time I expect the thread might eventually start wearing through and breaking.
I'm planning to sew a piece of webbing over my bar tacks on the "tree side" to prevent wear. Anyone else do this? Anyone have tree straps fail at the stitching yet?
I haven't thought about this, but it makes a lot of sense. I have not looked at sewing a thin strip of protective webbing over my structural stitches, but it's a good idea. I wonder if just sticking some gorilla tape over the stitching would protect it. obviously you'd have to replace it every so often, but it'd be less weight than more webbing if you're a gram counter
I have noticed the same on my oldest pair of straps, just a few threads going a bit fuzzy here and there. They've not failed yet but should really be looked at, I like the idea of patching them but it's probably just as easy to restitch them again.
I hand stitch my strap loops in a union jack pattern, using Gutermann poly thread and a strong needle.
I use cargo straps from Walmart. The cheap ones in the sporting section for about $5. One package gives 2 12foot straps. Cut in half gives me 4 6foot straps for $5.
The straps have lasted 2 1/2 years so far without changing them out to the 2nd set. There is some wear but not enough for me to worry for some time to come, yet.
They are inexpensive enough for me not to worry about them wearing out, since I do carry the extra for just-in-case.
