Yeah, nice job! How does it attach to the hammock? It looks nice and tight.
The slit is to fight condensation.
It clips to the ridge line and ties out through and under the wing tie outs. It is not real good when it is windy out though. A sock would be best for windy situations.
Forgive my retardedness, but if it doesn't fight the wind, what is the purpose? I thought these things were supposed to keep you warmer by restricting air movement through the hammock.
They do. Warmth isn't an all-or-nothing proposition. A topcover creates a volume of what I'll call "relatively dead air". While it can still move, there's room for some ventilation. Same deal with a tarp--it does keep you warmer by restricting air movement, but it doesn't cut it off completely.Originally Posted by east_stingray
Anything that seals up completely is going to be a nightmare for condensation. The nice thing about the holes (or slits) up by the ridgeline is that they allow the topcover to block most of the wind (usually coming from the side) while allowing air exchange by convection (up through the hammock and out the hole).

My top cover I have is mostly for winter use only. I will not normally be camping in windy areas during the winter. In any case I will tie it out straight down to the ground. In the photos I had it tied straight out and that was the reason for the wind getting under it.
You are correct, at least where my topcover is concerned. Mine cuts the wind very well - no gaps along the edges, and no breathing hole. It breathes through the material, which is very lightweight 1.1 untreated ripstop. Shug's video showed my topcover in a nice way, although he uses it slightly different than intended, in a good way.
