My name is Scott. This all started for me when I purchased a hammock from my local sporting goods store not realizing that the least expensive part of hammock camping was the hammock. Now you have to have tarps, bug nets, under quilts, over quilts, snake skins, and a plethora of ways to hang your hammock. Fortunately the is a lot of information here and on you tube to make smart purchases and or diy your own stuff.
My first experience was putting the hammock up in the backyard and realizing that even in 60 degree weather your are going to get cold on your backside and have a good suspension system will keep you backside off the ground. Now the research begins.
First purchase was ENO altas straps. Very happy with these, simple to use and very adjustable. Would like to make some woopy slings and try them out. Second purchase was a tarp. Kelty 12. Thought the other tarps were way to small and couldn't configure them in different ways like the Kelty.
First camp trip. Two day. Tarp had not come in yet so i got Lowe's blue tarp for the trip and barrowed a sleeping pad for the hammock. Everything went up smooth but the first nights sleep i got cold even with the pad. All pads "R" not created equal. Layering didn't help either. Had to do something for the second night. I had an emergency blanket in my backpack and was able to use it for an under quilt. It did the job and I even got too warm the second night.
I have since made a diy underquilt with two poncho liners and the emergency blanket. I dimensions are 72x46 with ripstop shock cord channels on all sides.
More to come
