Down Queen Size Camping Quilt - passable underquilt?

Hello,

Newbie alert...I have been looking for gear and have come across a down camping quilt (queen size) with 575 fill duck down for $89.95 (Canadian).





Comforter is 32 oz and measures 79" x 79"

Questions are:

What modifications would you guys suggest to make it a practical underquilt?

What temperature rating do you think it would have? (doubled up?)

Is it a good price or are there better buys in underquilts?

Any suggestions welcome.

It's a little short for a full UQ, unless you yourself are short, and definitely too wide so it need's to be cut down - but probably too narrow doubled up. It's probably not deferentially cut so you'd have to be careful not to compress it when hanging it.

What I would do is mark a top quilt shape on it, sew the outline then cut it out and sew the foot box and add edging and make a cheap down top quilt.

As for temp rating, hard to tell by a picture. How much loft does it have? Since it says "Summer duvet" I'd guess 50*F. Honestly, you can make a sewn poncho liner underquilt that will get you there for about $15. Mine weights around 18oz.

Mark that quilt is sewn thru. Only good to 40° or so.

I am using this MEC quilt as a top quilt. This, combined with my 0° Incubator, kept me very warm the other night when we had a low of 2°C. I will continue to use this combination into the fall to see how low I can comfortably go before I have to spend more money.

I would suggest looking up threads on Poncho Liner Under Quilts (PLUQ)s they start out 60x80 and fold down to 60 x40. Your would end up 79 x39.5 easily full size. Since it is sewn thru, it would be similar to the JC Penney puffer jacket quilts members were making this past summer. My take me down to 50*F doubled up 40*F. This down quilt should pack smaller than a PLUQ (which is synthetic) I think for the money it should be quite usable. If I didn't already have two PLUQs, 2 JCP puffer. I would be looking into getting one of these myself.
