Oh No, Not Another Synthetic Insulation Question!

I'm sorry guys but I'm just overwhelmed with so much imformation (which is a good thing). Drowning in information, starving for knowledge... So here it goes. I'm in the market for making a DIY underquilt.

First of all, down is out of the question. I'm stuck between climashield apex and primaloft. I'm not afraid of sewing quilting loops into the uq so thats not an issue. my issues are: compression and lightest weight for greater temperature rating (i think thats what we all shoot for).

If i were to ask for a full length primaloft or climashield uq to get me below freezing that compresses the smallest and weighs the lightest, which should i go for? like i said, on the quest for this answer I just feel like im drowning in information and starving for knowledge.

6oz Apex. Or a layer of 5 and a layer of 2.5 if you want to go to 20ish degrees.

^^what he said. General consensus atm is that climashield apex is 2nd only to down. 6oz/y should get you below freezing.

Recently made a 3/4 length (60 x 44) UQ from 1.1 RS, and layers of Climashield Apex 5 AND 2.5. With suspension in a 1.1 compression stuff sack it weighs 23 oz. and compresses to about the size of a cantelope.

Looks like I'm gonna go with a layer of 5 and 2.5 apex. Thank you guys sooo much for pointing me in the right direction!

Now who's got my climashield apex/nylon shell for the cheapest?

    I'm gonna go with thru-hiker.com

Including shipping I can get2 yards of 5oz and 2 yards of 2.5oz of climashield apex for $61.79 MUCH cheaper than a $250+ down quilt, not much heavier, and can tolerate a little moisture. I'll take it!

I made an UQ with a single layer of 5 oz and have been down to 28 deg, I would not want to ant colder than that with it. I think the 5 and 2.5 would do really well

If you can swing it, Dutch has Argon for $10 a yard it is worth every penny. I just made a Argon/Apex topquilt that came in under 10oz. But to answer your question, yes DWR is prefered but not totally necessary with synthetic insulation.
