    1.1 oz hammock feasibility study

    Hi All
Has any built a top loading hammock from some 1.1 oz ripstop?
I weigh in at about 192 lbs (and going down I hope )
and wonder if this fabric would be too light to hold my weight?

    Cheers
    Gunn

Will hold you, but will stretch! http://www.warbonnetoutdoors.net/ does the BB in 1.1 single and double. The vidio is a 1.1. My fat A.. needs a 1.7 double for lay, but the 1.7 would be fine. I am 245. 1.1 double will give you a flatter lay.

    Thanks
I can get 1.9 oz here in Australia but I am trying to shave a few oz off my setup if possible.

Gunn, I've slept in a single layer 1.1 at 240ish. I was worried all night, but it held fine. NorseAmerican is right about the stretch, but you are below what I would call the cut-off point so it might not be much of an issue for you. If you really want to shave the grams that is.

I made a DIY one from some 1.1 found in the Walmart $1 bin a while back, when I weighed around 215 lbs. It held me up okay but was quite stretchy. I did notice some overstretching of the fabric in spots -- threads getting stretched apart, distorting the ripstop grid.

Never did any serious hanging in it, but I'm not sure I'd have trusted it for more than a few weeks use. Laying in it felt like gambling. I decided at that point to use 1.1 only in a double layer hammock, which I still adhere to even though I'm now under 190.

    YMMV, of course.

OK, sounds like 1.1 is out and if I have my math right the savings is not worth it.

1yard wide x 3 yards long is 3 sq yards
    3 x 1.1 is 3.3
    3 x 1.9 is 5.7
    = savings 2.4 oz or 68 g

    there must be something though.

    cheers

You are going to make a 36" wide hammock? Seems a little narrow.
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

Yes your right, my bad. Should be standard 60"
But the savings percentage would be the same I guess...

why not make a double 1.1 ripstop hammock. That way you can make it have a pad pocket as well. Having options makes for better planning. Just an idea.

This is the option that I went for. I found the 1.1 ripstop in WalMart's $1 bin, so that's what I used. So far so good!
