    Hello from Huntsville AL

    Hello everyone

I retired from the Army 3 years ago and I already missed Camping. LOL Just purchased a Hennessy Hammock I'm looking forward to spend time in the woods again. I'm new to Hammocks, so I'm learning as I go. I definitely need to find out what will be my best set up for winter here on the south.

Welcome to the forums, you will learn a lot here. Thank you for your service sir and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. I myself am a jarhead but I got out in 1997. I look forward to seeing you on the boards.

    Hello from Huntsville AL

Greetings from a fellow resident if the Rocket City!

I depends on how far you want to extend your hanging time. This weekend, with lows in the 50s, you would want some insulation like a closed cell foam pad like the blue camp pads from Walmart.

I built an Insultex (IX) underquilt that is good down to about 40F. I used it a few weekends ago when the lows were low 60s and it was toasty.

I am almost complete with a down underquilt (plus one for my son) for those mid-winter trips. My coldest was Presidents Day in the Savage Gulf when it hit 25F. Usually, freezing is about as cold as it gets most weekends around here, so planning for 20F to 32F will handle most situations.

The good news is we have some great places close by like the Sipsey Wilderness in AL or Savage Gulf in Tennessee.

Here is a shot from last weekend.

That is a DIY hammock and rain fly hung high because we expected dry weather. The creek is Borden Creek in the Sipsey.

Hello and welcome to the forums from Indiana! Thank you for serving!
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."
