Here is the Peregrine Falcon closure map for Shortoff and the NCwall.
Looks like anything well north of the SW corner of Shortoff will be ok
    for camping.

oooh, I just found this!! I sure wish I could join you'all but I'm already booked to take my scouts to the sping camporee that weekend. I hope you'all are able to plan another of these hangs in North Carolina, maybe a bit closer to the coast??? Has anyone checked out Uwharrie ?? I would love to take my husband, he'll be the one in a (gasp) tent !!! I've so far gotten him to try my hammock but it's just to small for him. If we could go on a trip with a bunch of hangers and he could maybe see and try a few, well we all know that the minute you get into a hammock that fits you, you never want to get out!!! Anyways, please plan another of these hangs...... TinaLouise

Tina... keep an eye out for another Linville Gorge trip in Sept as talked about on the first couple pages of this thread.

I've not done much in Uhwarire, but that's another possibility for sure.
I would think of Uwharrie as a cooler weather trip (fall through spring) because of the low altitude & hot, humid weather in the summer, but I'm sure we can get a few more NC trips up this year!

And you're right, trips w/ a bunch of hammockers would be a great place for your husband to try out a few different type hammocks & get a few pointers on using them.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Hi Tim. Their site seems to be up and down, or gets overloaded. It was not working night before last, but was yesterday morning when I posted that. When I catch it working again I'll save the document.

    Here you go:

Got it that time Ken. Thanks.
Looks like the restricted area is well before the pond & the cliffs were I have often camped. What do you & the others think about finding hammock trees on top of Short Off for Fri & Sat night of that weekend?

Tim, last time I was there was fall of '07, just a few months after the fires. I think there were some unaffected, or lightly affected areas between the pond and the spring tree, but I'm going from memory here. I seem to remember live trees in the large camping area left of the trail at the "Gap" also. We took a break in the shade there.

A scout leader friend of mine has been up there a few times this winter. I'll get his opinion and let you know.

Yeah, I haven't been up there since the last fire & had forgot about that. Might be a good idea to think about another trail.
I don't necessarily think a soot covered hike would be ideal for a group of hammockers going in to socialize, meet for the first time, & for some maybe, see the gorge for the first time.
Let us know what your friend says about his trip up there.

...had a great view of the Linville area from I-40 this afternoon, on the way back from Hot Springs.

Where are we meeting next Friday evening?

Slowhike, can I hitch a ride with you?

Yeah, the ol mountains of Linville gorge are easy to spot from a distance huh???... as long as you're looking north at the right times along I40.

We haven't nailed down the exact location yet... but dang!!! it's just about here!!! Better get busy!
We talked about short off because of the great views, but I had forgot about the fires last year that I believe burned the biggest part of Shortoff Mtn, leaving it w/ lots & lots of soot to hike & camp in.

Lets bat around a few ideas & see what else we can come up with.

And yep, you'd be welcome to ride w/ me MacEntyre. I drive a little Toyota pickup, but hopefully we will have a decent weekend weather wise & we can throw our packs in the back w/o having to cover them.
