Hey everyone I just joined, but have been browsing the forums for a while. I have also recently started sewing gear and am hooked. I have made snake skins, a pack cover, and a few odds and ends. But I was wondering what would be a good project that is a tad harder just but is not a huge jump in difficulty?

Make an underquilt. A synthetic one isn't that difficult, plus you get to stay warm. If you're feeling fiesty, you can try a down one. Then you can give a sil tarp a go.
Welcome to the Forums. Enjoy the ride.

If you've really got some time on your hands, try going with a homemade down quilt (not necessarily an under quilt). That was one of my first 'big' projects and I've been using it every night for the past 5 years.

thanks guys, I was looking through the how to for each of those projects, and the all felt way out of my ability range for right now. Also being a college student the time needed to finish a quilt/ underquilt is something that I lack at this time. I was wondering if a Hammock would be an easier less time consuming project? Thanks for all the help, and Brian I just got my MacCat standard and already love it.

Depending on the hammock you may find it not really a step up in difficulty. If you do a gathered end hammock and add bug net that will raise the level of difficulty but not all that much. A bridge hammock might be an interesting project for you if you decide to go the hammock route.

A syn quilt is really no more difficult than reptilian derma layers. Just more fabric and more layers of bulk. Sewn through down quilt is a piece of cake. You could easily do either one. An offset baffle quilt is a little more complex but still more intimidating than hard. The "We Don't Sew..." vid series might be helpful for giving yourself some confidence.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Check out some of the projects for hammocks at http://www.imrisk.com/. Gathered end hammocks are pretty easy and quick to make.

Rev is spot on. UQs really aren't that difficult once you make yourself start. My cut insulation and fabric for my first quilt layed on the living room floor for about 2 days before I got brave enough to start the thread injection. It just looks scary, but it's a piece of cake. Whatever you do, DO NOT make a sil tarp your first project, or even your second. It's a good way to mess-up some nice sil....trust me.

I need to make a home quilt, thanks for planting that seed Brian.

    Thanks everyone for the advice.

Just out of curiosity what makes the sill tarp so much harder?

Very slippery and thin. Just makes it a little more difficult to work with. Stuff sacks are excellent practice tools.
