    Cooler Weather Practice

I started my cold weather practice for an October trip to Algonquin Park last night. It got down to 2 degrees C here in Kingston and there was a heavy dew. I woke up at 2am with a cold butt and got out to adjust the underquilt. In doing so, my back went up against the tarp and got wet. While I did get the UQ working better, I just couldn't get back to sleep, which is unusual for me. I bailed around 2:30. Tonight I'm going to use the Jarbidge quilt instead of the DIY IX and have a pad ready if that doesn't work. I have a new tarp on the way, which will be way roomier inside so I'll be able to move around without getting wet on a dewy night.

Some other things I'm going to experiment with...

    1. Draft tubes on the IX UQ
    2. UCO Candle Lantern sitting on the ground inside the tarp - (if this goes bad, please tell my wife I love her)
    3. Combining my 2 UQ's - IX and Jarbidge. The IX one is essentially a vapor barrier, so I think it will be up against the hammock with the Jarbidge outside it to prevent condensation.
    4. Pads. Multiple options here. Blue foam, Reflectix, Klymit.
    5. I've also got my eye on that blue goretex sock Lost Biker is making / selling. Waiting to hear more test results for it.

Hopefully, I'll have it down pat before mid october.

Sounds like you have a good plan. Testing like you are is the only way one is going to find out what works and what doesn't for them. Having a back-up plan is always a good idea, even for season vet's, also a bail out option is in my opinion should always be considered in any weather.

    Good luck with your testing.
