    DIY SPE! Will it hold?

Well, I'm gonna be doing some camping this tuesday before my Whitney attempt, and the temps seem to be dropping. Figured I better be more prepared, so I came across an open-boxed CCF pad for $8 at the sporting goods store and decided it could be of use.

I present to you my results. It's not pretty, but I think it will do the trick for now =)

looks solid and the insulation seems to be everywhere you're gonna want it. That's one piece on the back end, right? If so, this should be stable and warm enough. I'm curious to know if you find any cold spots, but I think you will be good

What's the best guess on what the lowest temperature this set up will keep you warm...assume a 15 degree rated sleeping bag?

I would guess around 30, maybe a little lower with longjohns. You can always stuff your empty pack, raingear, etc. under you in an unexpected cold snap.

I used duct tape to do some speer style wings about 8 or 9 years ago, maybe longer, before I got an underquilt... I still use that pad every day to do PT for my back. It will hold up.
