2$/yd bin at Walmart nylon help please!:)

Hey guys it's viper here!

Alright well I have a couple questins all go ahead and ask here.

But the first one I know will probably be near impossible to answer with the Imformation I know about it, but anyways I bought 4yards of charcole grey nylon at Walmart today for 2$ a yard. I know it's nylon but is their a way I can't ell what dinnier it is? Or a rough estimate?
And the second questin is do you really think ripstop would keep you from smashing to the ground? I don't really think it would with the weight of a person in it tbh >_> if you guys can answer these would be great thanks!

Calculate the square yardage of the fabric (you bought 4 lineal yards but it is wider than a yard), weight the fabric, divide the weight by the sq yds to get weight per sq yd.

For uncoated ripstop nylon...approximately...1.1 oz/sq yd = 30D, 1.5-1.7 oz/sq yd = 40D and 1.9 oz/sq yd = 70D.

Square yards = inches long x inches wide divided by 1296.

My experience with ripstop has been it slows down miner tears from getting bigger. But would not stop catastrophic failure under stress (ie...body in hammock).

The denier is related to the wt/sq yd. (1.1, 1.7 etc.)
Do you have a postal scale or similar?
Bundle up your fabric and weigh it.
Work out the area (in square yards).
Calculate wt/sq yd

I suck at math lol I'll have to think on this for a while lol, but just hammock body's same dimensions my 1.1ripstoo nylon body weights 7.7oz and his new hammock body I just made the hammock but he hammock body on this nylon weighs 10.2oz again same size body's. So this is obviously higher then 1.1 but I'm confused because I suck at math I'll have to think on it a while lol

The weight of the hammock body(Materal) is 7.7oz total.
I was under the understanding that 30d fabric weighed 1.1oz per square yard?
But like I said the total weight of the hammock is 7.7 oz so it obviously can't weigh 1.1oz per square yard because if it did it would weight over 17oz. Can someone help me figure this out?

Woops, got my formula backwards, as pointed out by VG below, should be total weight divided by total area of fabric.

7.7/16 = .48 oz per sq yd.

Can you breathe through the fabric? Maybe it has a finish on it?

Your calculation is correct, if your hammock body contains 16 sq yd of fabric.

Put another way, if your 16 sq yd hammock weighs 7.7 oz, then the fabric weight would be 7.7oz/16 sq yd or 0.48 oz/sq yd.

Is your hammock really 16 sq yd?
1 sq yd is a piece 3 ft x 3 ft or 9 sq ft
16 sq yd is 144 sq ft
So if your hammock body is 12 ft long, that would be 12 ft wide (single layer) or 6 ft wide (double layer).

A typical (?) 11 x 5 ft hammock body would have 55 sq ft or about 6 sq yd. of fabric, which would be more in the 7 oz 'ballpark' for light nylon.

I went back and read your first post. You bought 4 yds of material. Assuming it is 60" wide, that works out to 6.666 yards ((4x3)x5)/9. 7.7/6.66 = 1.16 oz/yd. Now, if the train was heading east at 70 mph.....:-)
