    CRL drip drip drip....

We had 1 night of pretty heavy rain this weekend on a backpacking trip. I got dripped on from above all night long under my superfly. This is the first really heavy rain it's seen. I see that the RL should not have to be sealed and I was thinking maybe something was wrong with my tarp. After searching further here on the forum, I see that a CRL under the tarp can get saturated and drip. I use mason line for my RL and it does seem to hold a lot of water. The only thing that is confusing me is that my brother also had a mason line CRL under his tarp and he didn't get wet at all. He uses an Etowah tarp.

I didn't see any specific instruction on how to prevent this. Should I just tie some drip lines on both ends? Should I use different line? I would prefer to keep the RL under the tarp. I love this tarp so far so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that its just user error.

I don't use a ridge line on my Superfly and I am pretty sure Warbonnet doesn't recommend a ridge line. On my other tarps that I do use a ride line on, it goes above the tarp. The drip lines will work if they are under the tarp and the whole thing is not touching the tarp. Don't know why your brother did not get wet.

Ditch the mason line. The problem is the ml. It wicks water bad. Paracord is a bad choice also.

Upgrade to some zing it. Zing it is hydrophobic (doesn't absorb water, actually floats)
and I haven't had any issues with water running under the tarp. I use an under the tarp rl. Small biners on prussiks hold the tarp.

    CRL drip drip drip....

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to try going over the tarp with it. I think I have some zing it lying around so I'll throw that on there too.

I'ved heard that using cotton shoe laces as drip lines right outside either end of your tarp will work. I used to have them on my tarp, but it never rained when I was was rigging my tarp so I don't have any direct experience.

I use CRL's on my tarps but I run them above the tarp so they don't drip on me.

+1 on this. Above the tarp works well

I would also use something different than mason's line. Zing-It/Lash-It is what I use with my CRL. I haven't been dripped on so far but I have only had a couple of rainy nights to deal with.

I'm assuming you meant to say just inside either end under the tarp. Yes, any type of absorbing material like cotton will make a good drip line since that's where the water will want to go. Then drip down.

Make sure any drip line or water break(like Dutch bling) in the suspension is under the tarp where it's dry.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
