    Supershelter augmentation

    hi all,
I haven't posted in quite a while, but i tune in from time to time to glean the wisdom from this board and to keep in touch with all things "hammock".

i have an Explorer Ultralight with a supershelter. I use it in combination with a space blanket as tom recomends and am well pleased with the results.

to get a good nights sleep in temps well below freezing. i put a 3/4 piece of ocf under the ocf which comes with the supershelter. this works. it works really well.

but i found something that works even better. a quilt. a down quilt.
it goes under the ocf of the ss and is held in place by the bottom cover of the ss and a few strategically placed bits of velcro.

    does anyone else do this?
in retrospect it seems like an obvious solution.

Is it a stock quilt from a bed or did you do some customization beyond the velcro?

its actually the bottom half of a down rei 600 fill bag. the zipper is gone , too.
when the bag was whole it was rated at 15 degrees f.
it was a mojave. i dont believe rei makes this model anymore.
i ended up with two....so i still sleep in one and i modified the other.

I don't use a quilt, but I do use a down jacket instead with similar (good) results. The nice thing about using a down jacket is I can wear it in the morning

is there no problem with using a vb on the outside of the down but not on the inside? seems like wetness would build up in the quilt since it can't pass through because of the overcover.

The moisture is blocked by the space blanket. Any condensation occurs there. The down quilt/jacket is (in my case) below the SB, hence no condensation occurs within.
