So I generally leave my Quilts folded in a large storage bin uncompressed but forgot to take them out of the stuff sacks from my spring trips. Pulled mine out few weeks ago and hung it and it seems to be losing some of its loft. Hope I didnt mess up the down leaving it in the stuff sack all through the summer. Any tips to get the loft back?

Ive read that tumbling it with tennis balls on fluff cycle in the dryer will do the trick. Ive not tried it yet.
This works quite well actually. I actually spray (lightly) my quilt with water, place 5 tennis balls in the machine and tumble at no heat for about 30 - 40 minutes and its fluffed right back up.Originally Posted by geomaniac

_No heat_ is very important. All you want to do is fluff. If you don't have tennis balls, clean sneakers will do as well. Anything to break up clumps without damaging the quilt.

If that does not work then wash it and repeat the dryer cycles. If you get enough funk into the down it can act like glue.

Well it was never washed before and there doesnt seem to be any clumps anywhere. And it was made last fall so it doesnt have that much use yet...It was just stored in a compressed state is all.
Do you still think it needs time in a dryer? Would tennis balls help down that isnt clumpy? Think a wash first would help?

I say yes on the no heat dryer with tennis balls. It just needs fluffed up. Or you can use a down wash and go about properly drying it. I loaned one of my down bags to a friend. He had it a year and had it in the compression sack the entire time. Even though I told him to hang it. I washed and threw in dryer with tennis balls and it poofed right out

No heat dryer with tennis balls works impressively well. A friend of mine left a -12C bag fully compressed in a compression sack for just short of a year the the tennis ball dryer trick brought it right back to life.
