I suggest using a "sharp" pointed needle rather than a universal point and don't be afraid to change to a new needle more frequently than you think you might need to.

I use a needle big enough that I can see the eye to thread it. Plus what ever I happen to have in my kit box. You can tell I get real anal about this question.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

"Bless you child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way."

Currently #90 aka #14 Schmetz Microtek (sharp) for Gutterman's Mara 70 (which I get from Scott @DIY Gear Supply).

I found with a 'too small' needle the stitches weren't pulling tight in silnylon (plus the 'can't see the eye to thread the needle' problem.... )

my only comment is keep an eye out for silicone residue on the needle after sewing for a while. I found the thread would get tight if I didn't keep an eye on it. Either clean the needle or just change them. I used a sharp singer #14 I believe.

I just had a long talk with a woman at joann fabrics, (i was picking up thread and needles just so happens). So what i ended up getting after long back and forth of pros and cons is the inspira microtex 70/10 needle, i almost went with the 60/10 but thought having a slightly beefier needle might last a bit longer. As far as thread, just by feel i noticed that the Coats & Clark Outdoor 100% polyester with a 100% polyester coating thread felt thicker and sturdier, also seemed to glide cleaner through my fingers. So thats what im going to use from now on. Also i can get it in town and dont have to wait for online orders. It does cost a bit more, $4.65 for 200yrds but i think in the long run it will be worth it.

If anyone has used this I'd love to hear more about it for long term use, I'm still fairly new to DIY.
