October weather is perfect for camping. And I do love hammocking when I don't have to tarp it.

But the one problem with October is that there are still too many leaves in the trees still to get a good view of the night sky. You have to wait from mid to late November to a really good, leafless unobstructed view of the night sky. Its a little colder, but November is also a great time of year to get into those woods.

Just experienced going tarpless, last weekend in the Cherokee National Forest. It was awesome to be able to see the stars. I also felt more freedom, being exposed to the forest. Got the feeling, I was a hanging burito, for a bear, while being surrounded with mountain laurel and the sound of a distant strearm.

I like looking up at the night sky.I live in the mts so i quite often just step outside for a while and look up. Don't know much about what i'm looking at other than i like it. Unfortunately we have had a cold rainy fall and winter time around here usually means overcast. There's a cluster of stars in the west i'm curious about.

I have Google Sky Map on my Android and it is great for gazing as it moves with you to identify the stars and planets you are seeing. Good cause I don't know much past Polaris, and the dippers.

Interesting topic. It was the experience of looking up a couple years ago on a camp out with my son and some church friends that got me back into the woods with conviction.

Unfortunately, I was in...a tent...there, I said it. The end result of that was that I found hammocks, much more time outside, much more time with my son and a bliss not previously experienced. So in that case, the t#%t was a blessing in disguise.

I couldn't agree more. The views from the hammock is one of the great things about them.

Last night was by far my best night ever in a hammock.

I try to go without the tarp as often as possible. Falling asleep to the night sky is one of the enjoyments of a hammock. Just laying there all bundled up, looking at the night sky, I love it.
