Good point. I haven't played around with the flint steels enough I guess. Anyway, thanks for the quick turnaround and shipping on my order. Now if could just get more time to go camping..

I also ordered and received the tent stakes and some zipper pull whistles. Fast turn around.

My plan is to put a little loop of reflective guy line on each stake to help me locate them in the leaf litter.

Thanks for posting the zipper pull video instructions too.

Or am I taking this a little too far?
    Don't think it would work..

It's my understanding that the spark is actually from the steel, not the flint. The flint ignites a particle of carbon in the steel which then burns and produces the "spark".

With the flints that goinggear is selling, Mg is embedded within the flint, the carbon in the steel is ignited which in turn ignites a particle of Mg scrapped off the flint. Do the following experiment: lay a white piece of paper on the ground. Now scrap the flint with steel towards the paper. If you look closely at the paper after scrapping the flint several times without any spark, you will notice small shavings of bright Mg on the paper. You can actually ignite the shavings with another spark from the flint.

Al has no carbon to burn.

I've really enjoyed the goinggear site, especially his well-done videos. It's not Shug, but then no one else is. Even so, quite informative and innovative products. Plus, he's becoming a hammockforums poster!

I just ordered 30 of the Red Tri Stakes. (Friends and Family) I hope they are just as good as an MSR Ground Hog. We have a lot of Sand in my area of South Carolina, so it shouldn't be an issue anyway.

    GoingGear.com VS. MSR Ground Hogs.

    GoingGear.com VS. MSR Ground Hogs.

Other than the GoingGear.com being a little shorter and not having the string attached. They look the same.

According to my kitchen scale they both came in at .5oz

Just a thought here...... We are debating a 1.99 groung hog compared to another stake at .99? Why so many post on this topic for a potential savings of $4-$8? Just a thought that struck me funny.

I think it's mostly because there is a 'small' guy with an online gear store that took the time to post on this forum when he discovered his products were being discussed. It's probably due to all the flack we take from the ground-dwellers, but I think most of us pull for the underdog around here.

Makes sense. I have bought much from cottage folke in this forum and am happy with everythingI have recieved. I guess if I had seen this post prior to my Ground hog purchase, I would have bought some. American small business! It is what it is all about.
