Glad to see I'm not the only one!!!
18” ! my legs are too long for that, I’d feel like I was heading for the ground.
My ego said, SURE you can.
Half way in my body said OH NO YOU CAN'T

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.
Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.
The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy,
while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn." — John Muir
Hang my hammock about waist high, so that when I sit in my hammock my legs are solid 45 degrees at the knees, my feet are flat on the ground-carrying some of my weight, and my buttock sets just a tad below my knee height. Also, fold my hammock in half, length-wise, before I sit...to get rid of the ridge laying below my thighs. Creates a perfect sit for having breakfast from the hammock. Yep, done a lot of thinking about this comfort strategy
"It's a wanderful life."
My rule is low enough to get in, high enough to get out and to keep the under quilt off of the ground. Amazing thing is that after setting up lots of times over a period of time, it just comes out right most of the time.
+1
It's kinda like the "Pirate Code", really more of a guideline than actual rules.

Texas Hammock Hangers Facebook Group
I've never heard of this 18" rule. I like my hammock to hang at a chair level because it's easier to get in and out of.
