There is a campground within walking distance of Copper Harbor, or you could do as we did...sleep in a church parking lot.

Dont even get me started. It's infuriating. I'll just leave it there so I don't get the ban hammer.
Same as Boudah! Mad beyond words.
Well, due to my gallbladder, I've had to back burner IR until next year. The surgery is looking to be mid April, and the doctor doesn't think carrying a weeks worth of gear in that remote of an area is a good idea 4 weeks after I'm chopped open. Even if it is a "simple surgery" the chance remains that under stress I could tear the wound open. Considering what the fees would be for a chopper off the island *IF* something happened, I've decided in this case, it's better to play it safe, then sorry.
Thankfully, I'd not dropped anything on reservations (for bus, or ferry) yet, so no worries there. So, I'm still planning the trip, for the end of May, 2015.
Thank you to everyone for all the insights so far, and to those of you who have said you're heading to IR this year, please take some pics and notes from a hammocker's point of view. Places you found to hang, etc. And by god, have fun
That blows man! Better safe than sorry. Goo luck with your surgery, and heal fast!
Great info here. Instead of starting a new thread, I would like to ask a question here if that's OK.
I'm planning on going solo next year - most likely September 2015. I'm interested in doing a little off-trail hiking and camping, basically just to reach the minimum 1/4mi distance from trail to legally camp with a cross-country permit. I know 1/4 in this topography can still be a chore, so no need to warm me!
My question is, can I get a cross-country permit, but stick to the trails/itinerary MOST of the time if I'm happy with the designated sites if they're in the zones I specify on the permit? Only bushwacking on nights I feel like I want a quieter spot? I hate itineraries especially when I don't feel like following them - things can always look nice on paper but change in real life. I feel like I'll be pegged down.
Anyone with some experience in this situation?
Mark, as I understand the rules: a normal sticking to designated campsites itinerary for less than group size can be altered on whim. Back country permits are much more stringent. I just got back from a week on ISRO and didn't really have an issue with noise at the camps, except for McCargoe with it's community fire ring -this during the busy season...however, the established campgrounds are lousy for hang spots as they really stress staying on the actual site for less impact.
Thanks for the info! That was my worry other than the crowds...getting there and not having trees to set up. Then what happens? Go into the woods and risk getting kicked out or fined? I figured getting a cross-country permit would be a good idea for that reason. I heard a lot of people say that really enhanced their experience. But I don't want to have to bushwack every night in that crazy terrain and thick woods.
The purpose of the cross-country permit is so they know what "zone" you are in, in case you go missing. And I think to track the amount of people camping in non-designated sites.
