Top quilt buttons

So I received my 1.1 from hk2001 super quick! Thank you! I ordered 2 1/2 yards of 5.0 apex climashield today and am going to be working on a top quilt soon. I think I like the idea of using buttons to close up the bottom. My question is how do I put the buttons on? I am planning on making another quilt with 2.5 apex that will integrate with the 5.0 possibly with buttons as well. Any other thoughts on how to combine the two?

I was working with 10 d fabric so it is thin.. I sewed a piece of 1" herringbone trim to one side of the quilt, then sewed buttonholes through that piece. It gave enough reinforcement to take the strain (so far).
