    Overkill?

    I have a 1.7 Double Blackbird.

So far, the few nights I've spent in it have been relatively warm, except for the times I rolled off of the pad. So, the pad doesn't really slip out from under me.

Does this negate the need for an SPE. I've ordered a large SPE from Ed Speer and it will be hand delivered at the Hot Springs hang in a few weeks. I still want it, just in case I ever use a single layer hammock, but is it overkill to carry a full Wallyworld CCF pad and then trim down a second pad to stuff the wings finally putting the SPE between the layers of my hammock?

I got the large because I'm apparently an active sleeper and it seems to offer the best coverage. Anyone have experience with a large SPE in a double layer BB?

I don't think many people have used a SPE in a double Blackbird. Kind of why they ordered the double layer, ya know. I don't think you'll need it, but having a SPE around the gear closet can never be a bad thing.

I have never used a SPE but as I understand it, it gives you a wider footprint for your CCF pads.
I would think that a wider footprint would be helpful if (1) the pad slid around or (2) if an active sleeper rolled off the pad inside the hammock.
You seem to fall into #2
I would think the SPE would help with that. Good Luck

Having the wings on the SPE will let it mold more to the shape of the hammock, which is what sold me on buying an SPE in the first place. I saw Darby's at my first Hot Springs hangout, and it looked like a comfortable nest laying in his hammock. I didn't end up using mine, bought an underquilt at the next hangout I went to. However, the idea would be the same whether in a double layer or a single layer, cradling you with the pad. I don't think you will be unhappy with it.

An underquilt would me more comfortable ( IMHO ) but it is also much more of an investment.

Go for custom foam. I ordered 60" x 80 1/8" Volara and will trim to 40" tapered. http://www.closedcellfoams.com/index.html

1/8 for summer and 3/8 for 3 season with 3 season UQ to bring down to low freezing. I found 3/8 is good to about 35-40 with minimal top quilt. My 34x80 3/8 weighs in at 11 oz, so stuff is supper light.

    .
Just wondering how you pack foam of this size? Are you ok to fold it?
