    Just Double Checking

I am new to this site and I've got the hammock bug. I currently have a store bought hammock I purchased from Cabela's years ago. I have only using it a hand full of times. It was a Cabela's brand when I bought it. Now, they don't have the 'same' product. However, they do carry Grand Trunk. My best guess is that Grand Trunk was the initial manufacturer and Cabela's put their name on it because looking at how the GTs are made my old hammock looks identical.

The suspension is factory channel sewn ends; large braided rope with heavy 'S' hooks and same size knotted rope for tree wraps. I'm planning on upgrading the suspension to whoopie slings and adding an adjustable ridgeline coupled with 1"+ webbing tree wraps with toggles.

By the research I've done on adjustable hammock ridgelines I need 100-105" line. I plan on DIYing the whoopie sling with AmSteel 7/64" to get the proper RL length I would double the raw AmSteel. So, seventeen and a half feet of Amsteel, correct?

I use 13.5 feet of amsteel to make one 6 foot whoopie.

First of all, measure your hammock. A good staring point for the adjustable structural ridgeline is 83% of the hammock length. You don't need to make a proper whoopie sling for the RL.

You only need a three to four foot adjustable loop to find the RL length you need/want therefore you can use less amsteel. The adjustable RL is made the same as a whoopie sling but there is a much greater distance from the fixed eye loop to the exit of the adjustable bury lets say 6 or 7 feet vs a few inches on a regular whoopie sling. To make an adjustable RL you can use about 12 or so feet of amsteel. This takes into account the added amount needed to make the buries.

For suspension whoopie slings you are correct. Basically double the length of the sling you want plus the extra for the buries as Dutch has mentioned.

The ARL in my sketch would use ~13'-6" of amsteel including a couple of inches to allow for shrinkage due to the buries.

The Whoopie sling would use ~13'.

@Bubba - I measured my hammock at 10.5 ft (126"). So, 83% of 126" is ~104.5" Rounding up, would the 105" be of AmSteel or completed Whoopie?

@gmc - Would using your sketch with the measurements of my hammock work with minor adjustments?

So I would make the RL's adjustable loop 4 feet in circumference which will give you 2 feet of linear adjustability. You can then have 12 inches of adjustability above and below 105 inches. You should be able to find the RL length that's most comfortable for you.
