One tree hang with a step-ladder?

All this talk about hammock stands and one tree stands got me to thinking. I have one tree in my backyard and it is about 10 feet from my deck posts. This is what I have been hanging from, but it occurred to me to try something else, as the tarp is not happy and i can't use a longer hammock.

Our fence is about 12.5 ft from the tree and I was thinking of tying/lashing a lightweight aluminum step ladder to our fence and using that as the other end support. The ladder and fence are 6 ft tall. The steps on the ladder will be facing the hammock. I figure it will act like a tripod of sorts and I can tie the hammock onto the very top of the step-ladder. I can't do something more permanent as we are thinking of moving in a few months.

Do you think it will work? Do you think it is a crazy idea and that I should sit down for the winter and wait until spring?

Thanks for any and all ideas and advice.

I've seen ladders used on HF before. You could tie the ladder off as you're thinking. I would angle the tether from the top of the ladder to the bottom of a fence post.

I was in Colorado Springs last week. With all the shooting stars, do what ever gets you hanging under them the quickest.

I hang directly between two fence posts in the corner.

I had to improvise when hanging in the attic with the only sturdy beams being very low, but the distance too wide for a 30° hang. I used a step ladder (the A-type) to get the necessary height successfully. I had eye pads attached to the beams. I then had some webbing attached to the "hand hold" of the ladder, and ran the foot end suspension through a biner, attached to the end of the webbing. This gave me the necessary height. Unfortunately I don't have a good photo, but maybe it's possible to see what I'm talking about.

Thanks, Good idea! Sounds very secure. I was thinking of using a ratchet type of tie-down to hold the ladder to the fence. Must experiment.

Duckworth; I hang directly between two fence posts in the corner.
That idea had occurred to me, but our fence corners are blocked off by tall shrubbery.

If this works, I will look for a couple of eye pads to attach to the fence post.
    Good idea.

I put together a make shift stand when I hang at work all the time. Two step ladders, facing each other, with my ridge pole just laying on top step. Run susp from outside end of pole under step.

I am not the only one!
2 ladders plus conduit = hammock stand.

I do larks head or even prussic the suspension around the ridge pole to discourage sliding so that it cant pull the ladders in on me

wow....that sounds easy! I just have to find a ridge pole the proper length. I do have access to another stepladder..... I could hang that anywhere in my yard.... or even.....in the basement......

A proven great Ridge pole is a chain link fence top rail - $11 at Home Depo.
Also, check this out - you are almost there by using ladders vs. tri-pods:

P.S. I used a tree and step ladder for years. Don't tie hammock suspension to the ladder, run the hammock suspension over the ladder (for height) and secure the other end to something solid or one of those screw-in dog tether stakes.
