    Lake George Trip Help

Can I get some suggestions for a great car camping and hanging site on Lake George. I have a new hiking buddy and this will be her first overnight in a hammock. We'd like a short(2-7) mile day hike in the area too! Trying to get a trip in October scheduled before sites shut down up there. Thanks in advance, guys!

I've got a buddy who camps up at Lake George all the time. He's a tent guy, and he has a boat so mostly hits up the island camp grounds, but he knows the area - I shot him an email to see what intel he can provide. I'll let you know what I find out - though others may be able to chime in before that.

Thanks, silentorpheus. Intel is good. I'm finding that all the state campgrounds up there are closing on Oct 13, and the next weekend is the one we can get away on. I'm still digging around though!

Are you after facilities or a short hike because of too much stuff?

    Here's my friend's response:

I know of no drive-in camp sites at Lake George (but perhaps that's only because I have a boat so I've never looked?) There are certainly close-by campsites, but no car ones close to the water. There's an RV park on the West side just south of Bolton Landing. I wonder if one can park a car and pitch in tent there? It's not my scene—I can't stand camping near people, especially those fools who run generators and watch TV so I've never gone in there.

There are two really nice hikes from the East side. Both have parking and then one hikes toward the lake

    1. Log Bay/The Waterfall (easy)

    2. Black Mountain (challenging)

From the West side of the lake:

    1. Tongue Mountain Range (challenging)

    2. Roger’s Rock (never hiked it)

It's not exactly an answer, but at least it offers a little bit of info and guidance. Interpret it as you will - I can't verify the validity of any of it.

    Cheers!

Silent Orpheus, thanks so much for the good info. Nothermark, this is really about easing my new hiking partner who is great on day trips into a hammock overnight. So no facilities aren't high on the list but I thought we'd keep the car close by just in case and catch a beautiful fall hike both days. If the car is close we can cook in style too!

The Tongue Mountain Range is spectacular. There are at least two, if not three, lean-tos on the route. It's definitely a strenuous hike, but it is well worth it. A five star hike, especially in the fall.

Nearby Putnam Pond State Campground is one of the most underused campgrounds I've ever been to (no crowds!) and has terrific access to hikes in the Pharoah Lake Wilderness right from your site. Check when the state campgrounds close - I think it's after Columbus Day. Yep. I confirmed, last night to camp is October 13.

    Lake George Trip Help

Fish brook pond, sleeping Beauty Mountain, and a hike to the tip of the tongue from the west side are all pretty easy hikes. Pharaoh lake is another fairly easy hike close by Lake George. There is car camping in Lake Lazurne, which is also fairly close to Lake George.

The reason I asked is that there are trails in the area through state land so one can camp but they are not state camp grounds. I think you will have problems at state campgrounds because they are cleared for vehicles so there are often not a lot of good trees to hang from. OTOH the trails are wooded so an off trail spot would be well treed.

take a look at this to see what I mean:

    Lake George Trip Help

Hogback road has some car camping spots on it as well. I have never camped there but I drove past them many times.
