Question Army Poncho Liner + Reflectix = What temp. rating?

Curious if anyone has tried this combination yet.

I am looking for a very inexpensive UQ solution and my local Army/Navy Surplus has poncho liners for about $20.

I can pick up this as well: http://www.lowes.com/pd_13357-56291-...3D2&facetInfo=

Would this be a good, inexpensive combination? I know it would be heavy and bulky.

What kind of temperature can I expect it to go down to?

    Has anyone tried this combination?

Should it be on the top or bottom of the poncho liner?

I was thinking that I could tape the two 24" sections together and it would cradle the liner on the bottom of the underquilt.

Do the no sew version of the PLUQ and just slide the reflectix between the two layers. I think you could be comfy down to the low 30s or even lower.

I just tried Reflectix last night

I just tried Reflectix for the first time last night (ironically, I got it at Lowe's). I was using it in my WBRR -- between the two fabric layers of the hammock.

The low last night was about 45 degrees with little wind. I was using a zero degree synthetic mummy bag as a top quilt. I had the TQ tucked pretty tight over the top of my body (and had it completely wrapped around underneath me too -- because I was so cold).

I was cold. Not impressed by the Reflectix based on my limited testing last night.

It may have some utility, perhaps as a modest foot pad, or as a vapor barrier in conjunction with a proper underquilt, but overall, my initial impression is that this shouldn't be a primary component of your sleep system if temps are going relatively low.

A doubled over poncho liner and reflectix layer got me into the low 50's and I was warm. That was before my underquilt arrived. I would expect it would have kept me fine quite a bit cooler.

    Mumblez,
I was at Joe's today and they do not have any of the $20 liners in stock, the web site shows stock for both stores, only at the pontiac store has the $20 ones.
I will do one with you though, we will work on them together.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out it got you down to freezing. Many folks who've used Reflectix as a pad have gotten down into the low-fifties and high-forties comfortably, which is also the temperature that most folks find a no-sew PLUQ gets them to (I was able to push it to forty-ish, but I'm an human furnace).

So, the two together would likely be good down towards freezing, no sweat. The only thing I'd be worried about at that temperature is condensation, which will be a greater deal with the pad being further away from your back (since it's colder there than when it's closer).

On the other hand, using InsulBright from WallyWorld (~$8 a yard, if memory serves; I needed two yards), I've gotten my sewn-up PLUQ down as cold as 21* F without dying and 25* F comfortably (figure 30* to 35* comfort rating for a normal human being). I added the InsulBright in between layers. The whole thing came out to be about two pounds (yes, it's heavy) and doesn't compress for crap. But it works...

On my first hang 3 years ago I used a sewn Poncho Liner with insul-fleece a product similar to insul-bright mention by FLRider and also made it down to freezing comfortably.

I took my poncho liner and ccf pad and light Sleeping bag as TQ
Down to 43°f and was warm all night
So I'm sure it's good down to the high 30's
But that depends on two things, are you a hot sleeper?
Or a cold sleeper? I'm a hot sleeper so I can handle cooler temps
    With less insulation

    Insulation

I have used the HH SS plus a solar blanket and poncho liner and was down to 15 degrees. The liner is great by itself doubled when I been down to the 40's. The nice thing about a liner is that it drys fast if it gets wet and takes up the dame space when packing as a UQ

    My Newb experience

I used a no-sew PLUQ and PLTQ last weekend down to 50F. I also was in a pretty strong wind. I slept in a pair of shorts and an underarmour shirt and was quite comfortable (I'm a cold sleeper by nature) when I could keep the PLUQ in place. When I rolled in the hammock, the PLUQ would end up beside me hanging on it's suspension. I have ordered a set of triangle thingies from Arrowhead. I was very simple in my approach with the PLTQ: I put a piece of shock cord in the foot end to make a simple foot box and I sewed Velcro 30" up the side. I am "cold-natured" in my sleep, but I was comfortable at 50 with just shorts and a T-shirt when the PLUQ was in place. I'm also thinking about a piece of reflectix inside the PLUQ or I thought about putting my Thermarest Z-lite sol in between the PLUQ and the bottom of the hammock.
