Michigan winter get together Jan 10,11,12

A small group of us are looking to camp in the snow on these dates .

Any suggestions on a location .

Im looking for pines or other conifers . Water side either creek , river or lake .

Public land with campfires allowed .

Be nice if there were some interesting geographical features like hills mountains , or gorges .

Really don't want to be to far from the trailhead just in case snowshoes are necessary or temps dip below zero and somebody wants to bail .

Hopefully this location would be 200 or 250 miles from Coldwater Michigan .

Of coures anybody is welcome to join us .

Any really cool places you've camped that fit the bill ?

Sounds like fun. National Forest north east of Lupton. Car camping or hike in a bit? Either way sounds like fun.

Mohican state park in OH. Is right up your alley but I'm not sure if it fits the mileage.
It is an hour east of Sandusky.
    Directionally challenged...comicly so.

Not all who wonder are lost...But I'm probably just lost.

    Riverjoe,
I have been thinking of winter camping in the Lost Nation State Game Area. Hiked the NCT there about a month ago. Plenty of trees, plenty of water and about a half-mike hike from a parking area is one of the only caves in the lower peninsula!! Of course within 200 miles of coldwater. Let me know your thoughts!

Perhaps look into Hoist Lakes, High Country Pathway, and North Country Trail in Northern Lower Michigan. We've had some Winter Hangs at Ludington State Park that has trails for snowshoeing (should there actually be snow).

These are great suggestions guys .
Home made this is a differant group then the Indiana guys . They are mostly around mid Michigan .

Taser if thats you this is the same event we're talking about on the other forum . I think you should input your knowledge of the area over there if you could . Assumeing you're the same Taser that is .

I saw a video on that Hoist Lake area and that looked pretty cool especially since the guy was catching trout about as fast as he could cast .

The reason I'M asking is because ever since I was about 14 and I first went to Northern Michigan ( AuSable River ) I ve dreamed of camping in a heavy snow in the pines .

That area around Hillsdale is really intrigueing for a spring or fall deal . Id like more snow then what we usually get at this Latitude tho .

    Riverjoe,
I am out for fall, since it is a state game area and it would be hunting season. But maybe for spring!

Well, that is the UP so perhaps a little out of your range (Miners Falls if I am not mistaken). This place might be as well. but I think it meets your requirements....except for the waterfalls and mountains....

Its a proven fact that 78.4% of all statstics are made up on the spot.

Thanks much for those links Stone especially like Getoffthecouch.com . That is some excellent info for free . Pinevalley is really nice and looks good . Have to run that by the group . Some others on the sight look good too . Did you guys ever try the North country trail in winter . Looks like some great sights there too .
