Boggs Mt. Oct 2013. NorCal hang.

My set up. Look at all those trees!

This is the third group hang at Boggs Mountain State Demonstration Forest (south of Clear Lake in Lake County, CA) and the largest yet: 9 hangers and one dog.

I arrived around 2:30pm on Friday to find DaveTelf and his nephew Tyler already there and set up.

    Tyler

Omerta925 and Octagone arrived separately later that evening.

The rest showed up on Saturday, some having had a 'fun' time finding the campsite.

    DaveTelf's feet, Octagone, Omerta925, me

We obsessed over each others' stoves,

    Octagone's stove
Octagone's stove was made from a Starbucks can. It worked sometimes, better if insulated from the cold concrete table with a packet of oatmeal.

We checked out each others' setups,

DaveTelf's taco/peapod/underquilt from a rectangular sleeping bag. Worked great, by all accounts. I believe Tyler did something similar.

and swapped stories around the campfire.

    Meld, Louisa, Sidewinder

We had campfires both nights. A LOT of wood was burned. Meld reminded me that the first time we camped here, the fire ring was large rocks. The monkey-decorated metal ring is a nice improvement.

Some of the braver ones spent some time watching about 6 dozen yellow jackets drown themselves in a dishpan.

The bugs were not interested in our food, just our water. I spend a large part of Saturday afternoon hiding from them in my WBBB.

We saw one tick. I did a tick check when I got home: no ticks.

    Various folks went for hikes.

DaveTelf, Octagone, Omerta295 checking out the Boggs map

Boggs has installed charcoal grills, so Meld stuffed a bag of Matchlight in there and lit the paper bag on fire. Cool!
    Sidewinder and he cooked steaks.

Sidewinder and Louisa brought Cody, a charming dog.

I finally fired up my Element as a wood stove, instead of using it only as a windscreen for my FancyFeast.

I made some pesto pasta on the Element stove, and Omerta925 toasted a bagel over the embers. I figure I can tote along a foil-wrapped slab of garlic bread for the next time I make pasta on this wood stove. Fine Dining!

DaveTelf made a pepsi-can style stove out of an Arizona tea can, and the heat waves from that stove were nearly 2 feet high.

Dave is trying to provide a background for the waves.

Kapang! and DaveTelf each brought an Aeropress for coffee (or tea).

DaveTelf is enthusing about it to Meld.

Here goes DaveTelf again, talking to Kapang! about the Aeropress (maybe I'm making that up). Omerta925 is not really clutching the tree in despair of all the coffee-talk, but is setting up a sunset shot.

A great hang and I can't wait for the next one! (Sometime in spring 2014)

Spoke to Boggs today. We can't reserve dates until January for the spring and fall. I will call them first thing in January for the spring and fall hangs.
The fire ring at Ridge was donated by Bike Monkey, which holds an event each spring. so those are monkeys on the fire ring.

Liz, thank you so much for putting this hang together. Louise, Cody and I had a wonderful time. It was great to meet everyone and share in the company. We ended up staying another night and it was sure empty without all you guys there. Boggs really is a great place to hang. So many trees! I hope more people from NorCal can make it next time.

    All the best,

    S
