    first night out

Well, had my first night out in the hammock. It was comfortable but cold - ambient temperature was 40F degrees and even in thermal underwears on and 30F sleeping bag my back was cold. Guess I need an underquilt? Other options? Sleeping pad?

    thanks!

A pad is definitely an option. Some type of bottom insulation is required, most people won't go below 60 without at least something.
I may be dumb, but at least I'm ugly!

I've done so much, with so little, for so long, now I can do anything with nothing.

It's not peer pressure, it's just your turn.

Yessir. A pad will help immensely.
Here is a video I did that may give some insight.

Wow, a 40° night w/o any type of under insulation...that's impressive.

UQs have their own challenges but get it right and you'll be toasty.

It is all a grand experiment to hang one's own hammock. Trial and error ... seems worth it, but it takes time. Hang in there (pun intended).

Yeah, its amazing how much convective heat loss can be such a pain. On the plus side, you now know how nice a hammock can be on a really hot day. Get yourself some kind of under insulation and you'll be comfy. Pads will work but a proper underquilt is much more comfortable and convenient.

Thanks for the input - sleeping bag is decent and I would have been fine in a tent. I'll look at a closed-cell pad first, and then an underquilt if it comes down to it. Thanks for the feed back - glad to hear I'm not a wimp

Does this almost qualify him as a "hardcore hanger"

I suggest trying to possibly rig that bag as an underquilt. In my limited experience, and from what I've read on HF it seems under insulation is the most important.

FWIW in my limited experience I have gone down to the low 40s with an UQ a couple layers of clothes and only a silk sleeping bag liner as top insulation. my back was plenty toasty, my nose, not so much.
