I honestly don't think you would get great coverage hang a rectangular tarp on the diagonal. Before I bought my first tarp(Kelty Noah9) I actually tried a 8x10 blue tarp I had around the house and didn't get good coverage when hung long ways.

i got my dad an SBpro and he got an 8x10 thinking it would work.
we did a 'dry run' with it before using it for real and didnt like it at all. he opted for the JRB 11x10 and is much happier. in fact, I'm thinking of getting one to replace my ENO dry fly

Well, the good news is that the first ever "real" hang of the SBPro is this weekend, and fortunately there's little to no chance of rain. We'll see what happens with it - either way, it'll be better than sleeping on the ground - or being at home/work.
Please let us know how your first hang went.
I'm new to hanging too and am trying to gather info on the subject. I've got the SB with a 10X12 tarp that I pitch with the long axis parallel to the hammock. I tried it this past weekend (in my back yard), but didn't have any rain... except for a light sprinkle while I was inside (prior to retiring to the hammock).
If you haven't been able to get a tarp yet take a look at this one at Campmor. here's a link http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___22048. I have this tarp as well and used it on my Eno style last year at Mammoth Cave NP. I got great coverage and it rain almost all weekend.

Well, Jim, we had no rain, so I couldn't say how well the 8x10 tarp I had hanging "square" over my hammock would have helped or not. It was a few inches off center, so I suspect I would have gotten some water in the hammock with me.

Great trip report! Thanks for sharing.
I'm seriously debating the Kelty Noah's 9 for my SB Pro. It looks to have a good cost for the weight. Seems to get much lower weight, you start looking at almost double the cost at that point.
I believe diamond configuration with only 2 stakes to manage would be the way to go for ease of setup, but slightly worried about coverage in a downpour here in FL. I think anything smaller than a 9x9 diamond would be cutting it close I'd imagine. My biggest concern is if I will be stuck laying in my hammock during a downpour instead of sitting in it like a camp chair due to windblown rain and lack of side coverage compared to rectangle/hex tarp. Any experiences with this?
