    Question SBPro & Tarp Sizes

What covers your SBPro during the rainy nights?

Rather than set up a poll, I thought I'd just start a thread as I'm concerned about how well - if well enough at all my 8'x10' shiny green poly tarp is going to cover the SBPro. I'm not expecting rain, but considering the weather in spring in Kentucky, it's likely.

(I remember reading the SBPro was a rather long hammock so I'm concerned my 'general use' tarp won't be sufficient...?)

Does anyone have experience hanging a rectangular tarp on the diagonal?

    Pros/Cons of such a setup?

I've got a 10x10 and it provides decent coverage. If it's sunny I usually hang it straight - the few times I've had rain (just showers really) I hung it on the diagonal and it worked fine. And of course you can hang it high or low close to the hammock for more coverage.

I need to rig up some tarp tensioners before I use it this summer...

I've often hung an 8'x10' tarp on the diagonal and it works fine. With a HH, just align the sides to match the asymmetry of the hammock and you're "cooking with gas". I have a SkeeterBeater (not the Pro) but have only hung this tarp straight over it (not on the diagonal). I don't know how the length of the SB compares to the SBPro. Used the tarp often with an ENO doublenest with good results.

Let us know how you make out.

+1 on this. Before getting my HH Hex fly I used the Funky Forest. It will provide plenty of coverage!

For warmer weather, a JRB 8X8 should give you enough coverage. I have an SB UL and an SB Pro. I use the UL when solo or when I have my little dog with me. I take the Pro when I have my bigger dogs with me. For some reason all of my dogs love sleeping in hammocks. The bigger dogs throw me over the 250 lb limit of the UL.

I started off with a Kelty Noah's Tarp 9. The sides corners can be staked directly to the ground with no line. It's a PU coated polyester and pretty darned durable, but also heavy. It's also cat cut while retaining tons of options for setup.

This winter, I went with the JRB 11X10. It is bigger and lighter than the Kelty. When the weather is nicer, you can set the big JRB tarp up in half. That leaves you wind blockage from one side and some coverage while still affording a view. If the weather changes in the middle of the night, the other half of the tarp can be flipped over to form an A-frame in just a couple of minutes. At 19 oz., that's a pretty good range of setup options IMHO.

I use the HH Hex (PU) for my SB Pro for 3 seasons. Haven't had a single problem.

I use a 10x10 tarp on my SB Pro. For light rain showers hanging on the square is adequate but it's a little short. Seems to always be a bit sticking out on one side. This is likely because I like very little sag in my setup. I prefer to hang it on the diagonal to cover more of the suspension lines and I still have a lot of side protection. All in all I feel a 10x10 is fine to give good coverage and be versatile. I could see using a 12x12 for camping in one location for several days but probably isn't worth the extra weight for hiking.

Thanks for the info... I'm still not sure what to do, though.

I need to hang in it to decide better i think; yes, you read that right, I haven't hung with the tarp up yet. I need to get my butt moving, too; 11 days and counting... O.o
