    Drying down?

So I filled my underquilt with 650fp down from an old comforter. It is not lofting up as well as other down items I have had in the past. Should i wash it first or can i just put it in the dryer with some tennis balls? I realize I maybe should have washed the comforter before cutting it up. If I do need to wash it do you all take out the shock cord beforehand? Thank you all for your help!

Comparing loft between different products is not always a good measure of the down. For example there will be a distinct difference between 650 fp and 800 fp down. So make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

Is the down in the underquilt clumped? If so there are a variety of reasons that might happen. Wet down will clump. Dirty down will clump. If it got wet and clumped you might be able to loft it up by putting it in the dryer on low heat with tennis balls or clean sneakers. If it clumped because it is dirty you will need to wash it.

650 fp by today's standards is not really high quality down. It will not loft up as well as a better quality no matter what you do.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Just be sure to use a good down soap if it does need washed. If you have more of the down you may want to overstuff to get the loft you are looking for since it is only 650. And just be sure to get it completely dry if you do wash it. Not much worse than stinky down while laying in the hammock
