    Hanging out in Florida.

I found my way to this forum while doing a search for some kind of portable hammock stand. I found the threads on the Turtle Lady Stand, and then the Turtle Dog Stand. But as usual, after I got here, I found there were quite a few other reasons for me to join this group.

I am a 61 yr. old X-Ray Tech, working 3 twelve hour shifts, Fri, Sat, & Sun, 7P-7A. That gives me the rest of the week to myself. Old history, 4 yrs Navy, 8 yrs Army National Guard (Inf.) Haven't been camping in a very long time, but now I'm getting geared up to go. I seem to specialize in doing as much DIY stuff as I can.

Just finished my second small boat, my first was a Pirogue, got a lot of use out of it. Took an interest in Florida's early culture and decided to build a replica of a Glades Skiff. Just finished it and will be testing it out tomorrow. I hope to do most of my camping from the skiff, as backpacking would be about my last choice.

Too many places won't allow hammocks, and others simply have no suitable trees. So that's why I will be building a Turtle Dog stand next week. I plan on using it when I have to, when camping from my truck or the skiff. What I don't plan on doing is carrying the stand very far!

Still got about 4 projects to complete before my first "big trip." The stand in one of those, and 2 others involve the hammock, mostly from what I've picked up on this forum.

For boat building, I hang out on southernpaddler.com and the jemwatercraft.com forum. For the camping, its bladesandbushcraft.com. I use the same screen name on all of them. I'd be surprised if I don't find people from the other forums "hanging out" here.

And now, for all things hammock related, looks like this is the place.

Hello from the East Coast. There are many paddlers out here as well.

Like Olddog states, check out the thread for the 4th Annual Florida Hang. You can bring your boat and TDS to the hang. There are a few handmade boats there and a lot of DIY rigs and gear.

    Hope to see you there.

I'm also into "old Florida". Have you ever read the book Gladesmen? It talks a lot about Glades Skiffs. How about showing us a picture of your skiff?

I appreciate the warm welcome! Hate to say it, but I'll probable do most of my camping solo, as I work every Fri, Sat, & Sun, all night long. So I'll be doing my camping just like my boat paddling and fishing, that is, Tues, Wed, & Thurs.

Once in a while, I will be able to break away for a weekend. But things being the way they are, not too often.

It was the addendum to Glen Simmons' book, Gladesmen, along with every picture I could locate on the Internet, that allowed me to build my Glades Skiff. Great book, but the info and drawing of the skiff was rather spotty. It took a while, but I finally got it done. And tomorrow, it goes in the water for the first time. After that, I've got some serious plans for it. . .

I'll get a good pic tomorrow, hopefully a video as well. Just not sure where on this forum it would be appropriate to post pics of a boat.

It has to be hammock related to post until you become a donating member. I would recommend putting it on a trip report since you'll be using it as your form of transportation to your hang spot.

Let us know how it went and show us your hang spot. We love pics. Lots and lots of pics.
