How to know if it is silnylon

So I was cruising around Wally World today to try and score so silnylon, but I am not sure what it feels like. I found some stuff today that could be it but I am not sure.

So how do you tell if it is sil or not. What things are made out of silnylon that I could find to compare? Is anything on a blackbird hammock made from sil? Like the stuff sack or something.

The stuff sack is. Best test is to hold the fabric to your mouth and try to breath or blow through it. If you can't then it is either sil or PU. If it is very light and slippery it is sil. Heavy and not so slippery PU.

PU coated doesn't always mean it's heavy. It will usually be heavier than sil but there is plenty lightweight stuff out there. Sil is "better" though because the pu coating will wear out eventually and the silicon impregnation makes the nylon stronger.

Difference, usually pu coated stuff will have a white or shinier side where the coating is and will be more like normal dwr coated nylon on the other side. Sil is the same on both sides and very slippery.

Put a trace of silicone sealant on the fabric. If it sticks nice and tight, it's silnylon.....if not, it's PU.

I've tested this on my Kelty tarp (it's PU) and the silicone tent sealant peeled right off with a light touch. Silicone sealant is what is used to seal silnylon tarp ridgelines. so it sticks like glue.

Yea, as mentioned above, try and breathe through it... If you can't (and you're sure it's nylon) then it's coated of some type.

I scored 15 yards of it for $20 at a walmart I've never been to before the other day.

Of course, I went through walmart.com, found out which ones have fabric sections, and then marked them all on my google map on my phone.. so If I'm ever near one, I stop in

A PU tarp will probably not last as long. First tarp i made from PU lasted a few years then started to wick moisture through. Second one I made from silnylon is still going strong 10 years later and has been on many, many canoe trips in Europe and North America.

And yes silnylon is stronger. I'm told it is due to reducing friction between the fibres in the cloth. And it is more UV proof.
