    DIY snake skins help thanks!

    Hey guys viper here!

Well after setting up a tarp servile times and also in the rain I hi I I have decided I want to make snake skins for my tarp and maybe hammock eventually.

So I don't believe the snake skins if they are mesh will really dry out the tarp when rolled up in the skins because the tarp is waterproof their for the water won't escape while being wrapped up in the skins...
But I am wanting some snake skins for my tarp just for how easy set up and take down is but I don't want much extra weight buy adding the skins. So idc really what they are made of just don't want them to rip and don't want a lot of weight. Any ideas guys?

And for measurements how do I go about figuring out how big the skins need to be? My tarp is a 11x9 Cuban hex tarp. (Also I would like to somehow keep a continuos ridge line on the tarp in the skins ready to go if someone can help me figurer out how to do that. Thanks guys!

    DIY snake skins help thanks!

One easy way to do it to take a 9-10" wide bit of netting, sil, or any other light weight fabric a few inches longer than your tarp's RL. Fold it in half lengthwise. Sew a seam the full length, add a channel to each end for the draw cords, and there you have it! A nice new Python Skin for your tarp.

I made no see-um tarp sleeves for my cuben tarp (11 x 8.5), and more recently for my tadpole (11 x 7.7). The link below has the pattern for the tadpole, and a link to a great tutorial. For the cuben tarp (with doors), I made the narrow end 4 inches and the wide end 14 inches. Total weight was 0.7 ounces.

To estimate the pattern size, hang the tarp, squeeze the fabric at one end (maybe even tie a string around it), and measure the circumference with a flexible tape measure (the kind used for sewing). Repeat at the middle of the tarp. Make sure to add a seam allowance to the measurements and maybe a little extra so that the sleeves slide easily in and out. Now you have all the elements to cut your rectangle of fabric, and then cut the rectangle into two trapezoid shapes (see example in the thread below).

A straight cylinder works just fine! Hang your tarpaulin and just measure your length and diameter. Hint make the two pieces different colors if you want to know which is the head and foot

Viper: As Polecat says above, the width of the tube is pretty flexible. If you're worried about it, use a STRETCHY material. I made a very serviceable set of snakeskins from a pair of nylon tights (NOT pantyhose!!--TIGHTS) The tube and the taper are already built in for you!

I just cut the panty in half and sewed up the each piece. Burn holes in the toe end and voila! The nylon mesh allows as much drying as you're going to get (not much) if the tarp is wet.

    See pictures HERE

My snakeskins fit over my 12x12 tarp. No measuring involved! Best of luck!

The easiest breathable snakeskin is a nylon bath puff. Pick one up at the Dollar Store for a buck, carefully clip the material that holds it together and uncoil it. It is made of about 15' of nylon mesh tubing. Cut it in half and lash the two pieces at opposites ends of your tarp or hammock. You can get two different colors and designate the head of the hammock that way.

You can use anything to make one. some have used cuben for ultra lightweight.
Just measure the length of your tarp and divide by two.
I made mine right like the instructions I posted for you and they fit just right.
