I rented a pair of snowshoes from REI last year, and although I found they weren't necessary I find them helpful a few times. They were especially helpful stompin' the snow down around my hammock. There wasn't as much snow up there last year as I was expecting (although still a decent amount) and with the way snowfall rates are going this year in that part of MN I would expect them to be very useful- especially day hiking like others have mentioned. You can definitely get by without them if you don't have them or don't want to shell out the cash to rent them. If you are an REI member you do get a discount on rentals.

Also- I found that 10-inch spike nails worked well for stakes. I learned that from someone on the forum last year. Hard to get out once they are in though. Snow stakes work well, but I have trouble with them from time to time so I bring a few spike nails as back ups in case there isn't a good spot to tie out to (tree, log, etc.)

I know I want to go on a day trip to Crosby on the Humpback Trail and it will more than likely not be well broken the whole way. Snowshoes with some crampons will help a lot.

The Humpback is a fun trail in the summer and I can only imagine what that trail will be like in the winter. For sure some good snowshoes for that one..Hope you get some video of that Shug as that area is a favorite spot of mine..

I picked up a pair of MSR snowshoes off Ebay for a real fair price.Turns out the guy I bought them from never used them so I got a pair of two year old shoes that had never been used..Some good deals out there..

They have no crampon teeth but work very well in deep snow.
Once you get the bindings set up right they are very easy to use, and fit any size, read BIG boot.

I have some extra that I can bring if anyone needs some

There WILL be fruitcake, though I have finished one already Making more this week

I still go back to those shoes any time the snow is really fluffy and over 2 ft deep. Much better float than any of the modern decked shoes.
And the fire starting scrapings ain't bad either. Also they make a great shovel

    Bring Stools or Chairs

Hey…especially old guys…make sure you tote in a stool or chair as there is a lot of lolly-gaggin' by the fire. A lot.
