    Texas, Guadalupe Mountains

Has anyone ever spent time in the Guadalupe Mountains around spring break? I have been reading that the winds are pretty bad during that time. I am trying to plan a trip for that area for spring break and wondering if I should push it for later in the year and go somewhere else for spring break 2014. Any ideas or suggestions?

I've seen where the winds are especially nasty in May and June. Your best bet is to contact park rangers to discuss the weather during Spring Break.

I backpacked there in August and the weather was hot but near perfect. There are a few trails that would be especially difficult in high winds, especially the "knife edge" going up to McKittrick Ridge. Don't trust the rangers advice as to trees for hanging. I found several options for a hammock in the backcountry campsites. Be prepared to carry plenty of water. That was the heaviest part of my pack.

Also, just FYI, the Peak trail and campsites on the way up to the peak are very crowded during breaks and holidays. The other backcountry trails offer more privacy.

I was there in May of this year, depending on where I was, the wind sounded like a freight train comin up the valley's. Spent the night on Guadalupe Mountain and it was pretty descent for hanging, but I actually slept on the ground. I grew up in a hammock, but just started camping in one, much better than sleepin on the ground.
