I believe my OES silnylon tarp misted during a heavy rain, but it was a serious down pour and mist was flying everywhere. I also have a tent made of silnylon do the same thing. The tent was a few years back and I thought that it was do to condensation being pelted from heavy drops. I don't think silnylon is 100% waterproof. I've also read on other posts about people having this problem.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm going to buy some sil from Speer Hammocks, make another tarp, and hope for a downpour. Then I can compare. I'll also know if there is a difference in the way they feel when sewing them.

Hey turkeyboy .... I envy your Linville trip!
I have had mist with my 100% pure nylon sil from Speers but it was due to condensation that I had inside the tarp. It was just forced off by the hard rain hitting the outside. Not too much though. Maybe that was it. It is just a tarp thing but it sure is nice to see the piney woods while laying in a hammock in a rain storm. Whoooo Buddy!

I have to say that Linville is one of the coolest places I've been. I really want to go back. Maybe later this year.

And the tarp -- well, i don't mind making another one just for an experiment. I'm still not sure it was actually leaking. And it wasn't too much. So little that when I woke up, i couldn't find any moisture on my neat sheet that was covering me.

    Live and learn . . . .

I wish I could be there. I'll be talking taxes in DC that weekend. Doesn't get more exciting than that . . . .

If you're willing to pay the weight penalty, can you just silicone spray DWR to get a more reliable tarp?
The harder I work, the luckier I get.

I had a very similiar experience with a fly I bought from Campmor--pretty sure it was genuine silnylon, since that's what they sold it as. After a whole night of driving rain in the Boundary Waters last summer (2 inches of rain), the fly was misting small drops through onto my sleeping bag. Had it kept raining that hard the following day, I'd have had a problem. And it certainly wasn't a seam leak. This was the heaviest sustained rain I've ever subjected the fly to; it's come thru shorter thunderstorms without any misting at all. Given the light weight of the fly, I'm not unhappy with the product, but I'm going to try applying more silicon myself to see if it improves the waterproof performance. Hopefully, it won't rain hard enough this summer to put it to the test.
