Just thinking out loud here, but I imagine a dowel that's just the right size would do the trick, and would be nice and simple. Glue one side, and you'll never lose it. That said, I used bamboo came poles for my mod, and used the connectors that were already included with them.

I don't know that you do, unless you get lucky and find sleeves from a tubing supplier that are just the right diameter to fit inside of them.

Here's a couple of suppliers for tent poles and fittings.

I took 2413 size aluminum arrows,,used 2117 aluminum for inside to connect the pieces together,,also used on one set,,a carbon shaft that fit inside and hot glued them like you would your inserts or cones if your making arrows to shoot with,,then to attach to the tarp,,used 1/8 bungie looped to the tarp tie outs and used on the ends of the arrows a 5/16 knock glued with fletchtite glue and the knocks fit the 1/8 like a glove and have never had my arrow shaft ever break. Total length is 48 inches (3 pieces for packing) and weight for a set per tarp is about 2.3 oz total. Hope this helps.

Found these, there are probably other sources as it is standard hardware:
