So I am curious why we WANT to camp in the cold? And it seems for most, the colder the better. And to make it even "harder" do it in a hammock! We can't even be happy sleeping in a t@^t where it might be a little warmer.
I get asked these questions all the time. For me it is the challenge and solitude. Since I have yet to see another camper in the woods in the 7 or so years of winter camping here in eastern central Iowa there is plenty of solitude. I have always liked the feeling of success (warm and dry) in the morning doing something that most consider miserable or impossible. I enjoy the challenges that the winter provides and the bigger the challenge the better. We have been out in blizzards, ice storms, -30F temperatures and the crazier the weather the more serious it becomes but the "reward" is much greater and the fun level goes up. We have had some bad experiences in the past but they were lessons learned as we progress. When the weather is really bad we have a car within 1 mile stocked with food, water, hand warmers, and extra clothes as a safety backup. I have been told by many that it is selfish and not fair to my family to run these risks unnecessarily.
I am curious why others do it? Are we crazy as most people around here say? What are the reactions you get from others when it comes up? Thanks!
